Portcullis Security Advisory 07-006 Vulnerable System: Bandersnatch Jabber conversation logger Vulnerability Title: Search parameters are vulnerable to SQL injection. Vulnerability discovery and development: Portcullis Security Testing Services. Credit for Discovery: Tim Brown and Paul Docherty - Portcullis Computer Security Ltd. Affected systems: All known versions of Bandersnatch, this vulnerability was discovered for version 0.4. Details: SQL can be injected into multiple search parameters which will be executed when a user visits URLs containing these parameters. For example the URLs http://webserver/path/to/index.php?date= and http://webserver/path/to/index.php?limit= both have injection points. By modifying these parameters which are passed during a request to the index.php, it is possible to cause error messages to be returned which indicates the presence of an SQL injection vulnerability. This is mitigated when PHP magic quotes are enabled, however Bandersnatch makes no attempt to validate that this is the case. Impact: By injecting SQL functions, such as that described above an attacker could potentially gather information about the SQL server, the databases it holds and data held within these databases. Exploit: Exploit code is not required. Copyright: Copyright © Portcullis Computer Security Limited 2005, All rights reserved worldwide.
